Andrew Karnavas and Charles Washington

What would a Robot Orchestra sound like? The Health Museum and Young Audiences of Houston wanted to know, and so they sent Just Add Beats sound designer Andrew Karnavas and recycled materials artist Charles Washington on a journey to explore the visible and the invisible, the tangible and the intangible, man and machine.

Participants in this hands-on workshop presented by The Health Museum of Houston and Young Audiences of Houston created their own instruments and sounds using Charles’ collection of recycled materials and with Charles’ assistance. Andrew recorded participants playing their unique instruments, mixed, and arranged their recordings together in a multi-track recording session to create the finished soundscape.

About this track:
In Sector Canto on Planet Opus, Apollo, leader of the Robot Orchestra, is conducting a rehearsal. All of the robots are playing beautifully until Apollo’s progeny Anóitos, the biggest robot on the planet, nicknamed The Concussive Percussionist, shows up late. Its giant steps frighten the other robots, and they scatter like birds. Undaunted, Apollo attempts to rally the robots to finish the song, to end rehearsal on a good note, but the damage is done. Better luck tomorrow.
